(self) massage Monday

the neck! headaches? jaw tension? hurt to turn your head? this one is for you.

Hello and greetings to you on this Monday!

Opening up today with a similar, and expanded upon grounding: abolish ICE, free Palestine. Any day you’re reading this is a day I’m morning lives lost to imperialism, colonialism, and white supremacy. May our daily actions big and small bring us all closer to freedom.

Alongside all the horrific and joyous things and events that are happening near or far from you, I am here again to remind you that you have a body and you are allowed to feel better in it. These exercises are a great neck release with a combination of massaging the neck with your hands and utilizing a towel on the floor. Get a chair that you can sit upright in (making this video great for desk job lunch break reset) and a clear space on the ground with a bath towel. Thanks for being here.

I learned some of these from a video with Ann Teachworth on the Association for Bodywork and Massage Professionals. She had a quote that I appreciated when thinking about our time with our bodies: “Transformation doesn’t just happen from the experience, it happens in our reflection from the experience.”

Even though these self massage videos I occasionally send out are brief and bite sized, I hope the invitation to observe the change that can occur even from just a few thoughtful moments of attention and touch serve you and your day.

This week I’m trying out spending less time finding anatomy photos to teach the muscles and I also am sharing two videos: one for in the chair, and one on the floor. What do you think? Do you miss visualizing the muscles we’re hoping to effect change to with these techniques or do you just want to get some guidance on what to do to maybe feel a little better?
